the answer, simply – true recycling is taking place. the locals gather old and discarded quilts and remove the innards. the varying tog valued stuffing is then packed and purchased by local cloth makers and reused in the quilted jackets purchased by the unsuspecting tourists to this region.

outside the camel market in pushkar - there is a row of street traders occupied in some frantic trading.
no, not selling lemons, spices or camel saddles - they are resoling shoes. resoling shoes with discarded, worn out car and lorry tyres. they take the offending footwear which is either worn or has light shining through. they outline the shoe size in the worn tyre. they then cut out the shape and affix it to the footwear to be repaired. now the skill - with a bit of trimming, filing and expert eye - voila! a newly soled pair of shoes.

ahmed khan came up with an idea, to mix recycled plastic with ashphalt when laying roads. khan has been running his company, KK polyflex, for 20 years, producing plastic sacks. about 8 years ago he realised that the anti‐plastics lobby had a point, and that the industry was ignoring the problem of plastic waste.
instead of avoiding the issue he rolled up his sleeves to create an opportunity out of the situation. the plastic appears to have strengthened roads by enhancing asphalt’s bonding ability, and made the roads longer lasting by rendering them more impervious to water. “in 15 days we collected 18 tonnes of waste,” says ahmed khan. barring rigid plastics, they accept all manner of film waste without the need for sorting. he has a contract to lay 500 miles of roads in bangalore, where the suitability of the new roadway will be closely monitored.
